Bolton Woods

The canal's route now hits modern buildings, and is lost under a multitude of tin sheds. As with the canal, only the name of Bolton Woods remains, the most of the woodland itself which once ran down the hillside to meet the canal has long since vanished - that's progress for you! At least the country side has not completely disappeared. To the left of the canal route are a number of fields and small copses. In the distance modern houses have begun to encroach on the land as it has gradually been sold off to developers.

As the ground level has been raised on the Bradford side of Stanley Road Bridge, the parapet has been droped to only a few blocks high.  To the left of the canal stands a large block building. You could be forgiven for mistaking it for a pumping station, however, no lock ever existed at this site, and the building doesn't appear to exist on the 1908 map. Looking closely it may be part of Bradford's modern sewerage system.

Canal Road

We now reach Canal Road, today pretty much the only indication as we head into Bradford itself that a canal ever existed! The route hits the Arnold Laver Timber yard which runs along a long strip of land covering the canal with sheds and a storage yard. Instead of walking the route along the busy canal road (to the right of the canal), you may prefer to follow the old track from Stanley road bridge around the side of the Bolton Woods Quarry (to the left of the canal). It will take you up to the copses where you can then follow a footpath off to the right through the fields and back down parallel with the canal.
